10 Things We LOVE About 1840 Merrimac Court

As an Atlanta real estate agent, it's so much fun to meet homeowners that truly LOVE their home.  When we first stepped inside 1840 Merrimac Court, we knew this home was well-loved and that the current owners would have a story to share.  We asked that they jot down a quick list of the top 10 things they loved most about their Atlanta home and as you will see below, the list is a long one!

If you have been searching for a home in the Emory, Northlake or Toco Hills area AND you would love to have a swimming pool, this fabulous home may be the one for you!  Read more below and you can also click here to view additional photos.

1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

1840 Merrimac Ct Atlanta GA 30329

Living on a cul de sac has several advantages. Privacy. It’s quieter than a thru street. It’s safer in that cars have to slow down. It is an older, established neighborhood as well. When people move in they tend to stay for many years. You’ll regularly see people out walking, enjoying the beauty of all of the old growth greenery and peacefulness.

Mount Brian takes you right to Clairmont and either Decatur ( 10 minutes away) or to the I-85 exit ( a little over a mile away.)  Or if you want to head to Toco Hills, Emory area, Whole Foods, etc., taking Berkley to North Druid Hills gets you there in minutes. Finally, curling around by Jan Hill and behind you, the street will take you to Briarcliff, where a left leads to more shopping, the route to the Lenox  area ( 3 or 4 miles away), and a right takes you easily to I-85 Clairmont exit during peak traffic periods.

2.  WATER FEATURES

View of the pool at Merrimac CourtThe free form swimming pool! It’s “sports depth” which means its been ideal for things like water volleyball, comfortable swimming, cooling off on during the late spring, summer and early fall. The pool has a custom made sturdy winter cover that is easy to put on and take off.  During the summer, don’t be surprised if you are in the pool several times every day!

The fountain and pond located on the far side of the pool is delightful music and relaxing to watch. For years, the pond nurtured goldfish, koi, frogs, though recently only the frogs and an occasional toad have resided there. The sound of water also adds to the tranquality of the backyard.  [Get more information and photos of the swimming pool]

3.  YARD AND GARDENS

The situation of the home is such that the house itself is sited on the “skinny” end of the pie-wedge shaped half acre lot so that from the street it appears to be your typical mid-century “cottage”. It’s many charms are somewhat hidden behind a small, managable front lawn  area and the welcoming front patio and portico.

The yard has had over 36 years of loving work put into it. Invasive ivy has been eliminated ( for the most part). Paths have been established. HUNDREDS of plants, shrubs, trees have been planted and nurtured. Most are care-free in that they are native and perennial. Many are both  beautiful and fragrant.

4. THE THREE-SEASON SCREENED PORCH

View of the screened porchDesigned by noted architect William Carpenter and added ten years ago, the L-shaped screened porch on the back of the addition is a wonderful hideaway and great for entertaining. It sits up among the greenery of the trees and makes you feel like you are out in the country. The vaulted ceilings and 5-foot overhang help to keep it cool even on the hottest days.

Need a short nap? Want a great place to stretch out and read? We’ve enjoyed our hanging bed tremendously not only for these purposes, but we’ve actually used it overnight ourselves or for company. Comfortable camping!

The porch is a wonderful place for cats or dogs as well!  Allows them to “be outdoors” without any of the dangers of being outside.
